Skipping two grades (third and ninth), Shapiro went from Walter Reed Middle School to Yeshiva University High School of Los Angeles where he graduated in 2000 at age 16.[9][4] He graduated summa cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa from the University of California, Los Angeles in 2004, at age 20, with a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science and then cum laude from Harvard Law School in 2007.[10] He then practiced law at Goodwin Procter. As of March 2012 he ran an independent legal consultancy firm, Benjamin Shapiro Legal Consulting, in Los Angeles.[4]
Career
Author
Shapiro became interested in politics at a young age. He started a nationally syndicated column when he was 17 and had written two books by age 21.[11]
In his first book Brainwashed: How Universities Indoctrinate America's Youth (2004), Shapiro argues that students are not exposed to a variety of viewpoints at universities and that those who do not have strong opinions will be overwhelmed by an atmosphere dominated by liberal instructors even if discussion is encouraged in classrooms.[12]
In 2011, HarperCollins published Shapiro's fourth book, Primetime Propaganda: The True Hollywood Story of How the Left Took Over Your TV, in which Shapiro argues that Hollywood has a left-wing agenda that it actively promotes through prime-time entertainment programming. In the book, the producers of Happy Days and M*A*S*H say they pursued a pro-pacifist, anti-Vietnam-War agenda in those series.[13] The same year Primetime Propaganda came out, Shapiro became a fellow at the David Horowitz Freedom Center.[14]
In 2013, Threshold Editions published Shapiro's fifth book, Bullies: How the Left's Culture of Fear and Intimidation Silences Americans.[15]
In 2019, Shapiro published the book The Right Side of History: How Reason and Moral Purpose Made the West Great which focuses on the importance of Judeo-Christian values and laments the decline of those values in modern America.[16][17][18] In a May 2019 interview on BBC where Shapiro was promoting his book, the interviewer Andrew Neil suggested that Shapiro's history of remarks were inconsistent with the message of the book.[16] Shapiro took offense to the questioning, accused Neil (a prominent British conservative journalist) of being a leftist, said Neil was trying to make a 'quick buck...off of the fact that I'm popular and no one has ever heard of you', and stormed out of the interview.[19][16][20][21][22][23] Shapiro later admitted that he had been 'destroyed' by Neil, commenting on Twitter that he '[had broken his] own rule, and wasn't properly prepared'.[24]
In the book and remarks following the release of the book, Shapiro said that basic research and experimental science were unique to the West. Juan Cole, a professor of Middle-Eastern Studies at the University of Michigan, described Shapiro's claims as false, noting that sophisticated science was also conducted in other parts of the world. For example, Hasan Ibn al-Haytham, an Arabic 10th-11th century scholar is considered among the first to present the scientific method (which Europeans would use centuries later during the Renaissance).[25] Economist Noah Smith criticized the book, noting that measures of scientific prowess such as the Nobel prize are flawed, as they are awarded by Swedish scientists who are more likely to be aware of ground-breaking research by Western scholars who publish in familiar languages.[26]
Columnist
In 2012, Shapiro became editor-at-large of Breitbart News, a conservative website founded by Andrew Breitbart.[27] In March 2016, Shapiro resigned from his position as editor-at-large of Breitbart News following what he characterized as the website's lack of support for reporter Michelle Fields in response to her alleged assault by Corey Lewandowski, Donald Trump's former campaign manager.[28][29] After Shapiro's departure, Breitbart published a piece, falsely attributed to Shapiro's father's pseudonym, saying 'Ben Shapiro betrays loyal Breitbart readers in pursuit of Fox News contributorship', which Breitbart later deleted.[30][31] After leaving Breitbart News, Shapiro was a frequent target of anti-Semitic rhetoric from the alt-right.[31] According to a 2016 analysis by the Anti-Defamation League, Shapiro was the most frequent target of anti-Semitic tweets against journalists.[32][33]
On February 7, 2013, Shapiro published an article citing unspecified Senate sources who said that a group named 'Friends of Hamas' was among foreign contributors to the political campaign of Chuck Hagel, a former U.S. Senator awaiting confirmation as Secretary of Defense as a nominee of President Barack Obama, but weeks later Slate reporter David Weigel reported there was no evidence such a group existed.[34] Shapiro told Weigel that the story he published was 'the entirety of the information [he] had.'[35][36][37]
On October 7, 2013, Shapiro and business partner Jeremy Boreing co-founded TruthRevolt,[38] a U.S. media watchdog and activism website, in association with the David Horowitz Freedom Center. TruthRevolt ceased operations in March 2018.[39]
Host
In 2012, Shapiro joined KRLA-AM 870 as a host on their morning radio program alongside Heidi Harris and Brian Whitman.[40] By 2016, he was one of the hosts for KRLA's The Morning Answer, a conservative radio show. Internal emails showed that Shapiro faced pressure from Salem Media executives, the syndicate that owned the show, to be more supportive of Donald Trump during the 2016 presidential election. Shapiro however remained highly critical of Trump throughout the election.[41]
Shapiro and Boreing founded The Daily Wire on September 21, 2015. He is editor-in-chief as well as the host of his online political podcast The Ben Shapiro Show, broadcast every weekday.[42][43] As of March 2019, the podcast was ranked by Podtrac as the second most popular podcast in the U.S.[44]Westwood One began syndicating The Ben Shapiro Show podcast to radio in April 2018.[45] In 2018, Politico described the podcast as 'massively popular'.[46] In January 2019, Westwood One expanded Shapiro's one-hour podcast-to-radio program, adding a nationally syndicated two-hour live radio show, for three hours of Ben Shapiro programming daily.[47] As of March 2019, according to Westwood One, The Ben Shapiro Show is being carried by more than 200 stations, including in nine of the top ten markets.[48]
In September 2018, Shapiro started hosting The Ben Shapiro Election Special on Fox News. The limited-run series covered news and issues relating to the 2018 midterm elections.[49]
Shapiro has made frequent appearances on PragerU with talks on intersectionality and Hollywood with 4,900,000 to 8,400,000 views as of December 2018.[50][51][52]
Campus lecturer
Shapiro frequently speaks at a number of college campuses across the United States, often to present his conservative viewpoint on more controversial subjects. He spoke at 37 campuses between early 2016 and late 2017.[6]
Some students and faculty members at California State University, Los Angeles objected to a speech that Shapiro, who was then an editor at Breitbart News, was scheduled to hold at the university on February 25, 2016, titled 'When Diversity Becomes a Problem'. University president William Covino cancelled the speech three days before it was to take place, with the intention of rescheduling it so that the event could feature various viewpoints on the subject of campus diversity. Covino ultimately reversed his decision, allowing the speech to go on as planned.[53][54] The day of the speech, student protesters formed human chains, blocking the doors to the event, and staging sit-in protests. When Shapiro began his speech, a protester pulled the fire alarm. After the speech ended, Shapiro was escorted out by campus police.[55] Young America's Foundation announced it was filing a lawsuit against the university (with Shapiro as one of the plaintiffs), claiming that the First and Fourteenth Amendment rights of the students were violated by Covino's attempted cancellation of the event, as well as the physical barricading of students from entering or leaving the event.[56]
In August 2016, DePaul University revoked an invitation for Shapiro to address students at the school and barred him from entering the campus due to 'security concerns.'[57]
On September 14, 2017, Shapiro gave a speech at the invitation of the University of California, Berkeley student organization Berkeley College Republicans where he criticized identity politics.[58][59] The event involved a large police presence which had been promised by Berkeley Chancellor Carol T. Christ in her August letter that supported free speech. Together, the university and the city of Berkeley spent $600,000 on police and security for the event, which transpired with nine arrests but no major incidents.[60][61][62]
Views
Political ideology
Shapiro at the 2018 CPAC in National Harbor, Maryland
The New Yorker, Haaretz and Vox have described Shapiro as 'right-wing'.[63][64][65] Shapiro's views have been described by The New York Times as 'extremely conservative'.[6] In 2016, Shapiro described himself as 'basically a libertarian'.[66] He accuses the left of believing in an imaginary 'hierarchy of victimhood' in which the opinions of members of persecuted groups like the LGBT community are afforded more credence. He has argued that the left has dominated American culture through popular entertainment, media, and academia in a way that has made conservatives feel disenfranchised, and helped lead to the election of Donald Trump in the 2016 presidential election.[6]
Shapiro supported the 2003 invasion of Iraq, arguing that 'China is a dictatorship. North Korea is a dictatorship. Saudi Arabia, Libya, Syria, Pakistan and Egypt are all dictatorships. We can't overthrow all of those regimes simply to free their citizens. We have to focus on those regimes that endanger American security.'[67]
In 2006, Shapiro called for sedition laws to be reinstated. He cited speeches critical of the George W. Bush administration by Democrats Al Gore, John Kerry and Howard Dean as 'disloyal' and seditious.[68][69] Shapiro subsequently retracted these views in a 2018 column, stating that his column 'absolutely blows. It's garbage' and that the idea was 'inherently idiotic'.[70] Shapiro later described President Barack Obama's 2010 State of the Union Address as 'philosophically fascist.'[71]
Shapiro is a critic of the alt-right movement,[72] stating in 2017, 'It is a garbage movement composed of garbage ideas. It has nothing to do with Constitutional Conservatism.'[73]
Shapiro has called for lowering taxes on the very wealthy.[6] He has also backed privatizing social security, criminalizing abortion, and repealing the Affordable Care Act.[6]
Shapiro has acknowledged that climate change is occurring, but questioned 'what percentage of global warming is attributable to human activity.'[74] Regarding sea-level rise as a result of climate change which will result in coastal property getting underwater, Shapiro said, 'You think people aren't just going to sell their homes and move?'[75]
Muslims
In a 2014 YouTube video entitled 'The Myth of the Tiny Radical Muslim Minority', Shapiro said, 'We're above 800 million Muslims who are radicalized – more than half the Muslims on earth. That's not a minority... the myth of the tiny radical Muslim minority is just that: it's a myth'. An analysis of the video by PolitiFact and Channel 4 News in the UK rejected his contentions.[76][77]
In a 2002 article, Shapiro wrote, 'I am getting really sick of people who whine about 'civilian casualties'... when I see in the newspapers that civilians in Afghanistan or the West Bank were killed by American or Israeli troops, I don't really care'. Shapiro declared that 'One American soldier is worth far more than an Afghan civilian', accusing Afghan civilians of being 'fundamentalist Muslims' who provide cover for terrorists or give them money.[78] Shapiro later apologized for these assertions. He stated that the 2002 article was 'just a bad piece, plain and simple, and something I wish I'd never written'. He said that while he still partially agreed with his article's main point—'that we must calculate the risk to American services members when we design rules of engagement'—he 'expressed [that point] in the worst possible way, and simplifie[d] the issue beyond the bounds of morality (particularly by doubting the civilian status of some civilians)'.[70]
In 2016, Shapiro promoted an article written for The Daily Wire, which described the Muslim presence in Europe as a 'disease' and Muslim men as 'uncivilized'.[79][80]
In 2019, Shapiro opined that Muslim Congresswoman Ilhan Omar, whose comments about American support for Israel were accused of evoking anti-Semitic tropes, and the white supremacist San Diego shooter, hold 'a lot of the same opinions about Jews'. The claim was criticized by journalist Mehdi Hasan, who noted that the shooter also held anti-Muslim views.[81]
Abortion
Shapiro speaking at the 2018 Young Women's Leadership Summit in Dallas, Texas
Shapiro supports a ban on abortion,[82] including in cases of rape and incest.[83] He has referred to women who have abortions as 'baby killers'.[84]
In 2019, Shapiro spoke at the annual March for Life in Washington, D.C., where he said abortion is a 'violent act'.[85]
Gun ownership
Writing in October 2017, in the aftermath of the Las Vegas shooting, Shapiro argued that 'banning all guns would be unwise as well as immoral,' but 'we must balance the need and right to firearms with public policy concerns, including the risk that a machine gun will be used in public.' Shapiro suggested that policy makers 'should look at ways of enforcing federal laws banning the sale of guns to the mentally ill.'[86]
Following the December 2012 Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting, Shapiro appeared on CNN's Piers Morgan Tonight on January 10, 2013 to debate Morgan on the issue of gun control.[87][88] Video of the encounter quickly received millions of views and went viral.[43]
Race
Shapiro has argued that African-Americans were historically victims of injustice in the United States but that they are not victims of widespread systemic injustice today.[6] Shapiro has dismissed the idea that the United States was founded on slavery and argued that America 'was founded in spite of slavery.'[89] In 2017, Shapiro argued that 'The idea that black people in the United States are disproportionately poor because America is racist; that's just not true.'[90] Writing in the aftermath of the Charleston church shooting, Shapiro argued that 'the confederate flag should not be displayed on state grounds, but is perfectly appropriate for display at war memorials.'[91]
Shapiro was one of several conservative commentators condemning Representative Steve King (R-IA) after King's January 2019 comments in defense of the terms 'white supremacy' and 'white nationalism'. Shapiro called for King to be censured, and supported King's 2020 primary challenger Randy Feenstra.[92]
Israeli–Palestinian conflict
In 2003, Shapiro published a column demanding that Israel 'transfer the Palestinians and the Israeli-Arabs from Judea, Samaria, Gaza and Israel proper.' Citing expulsion of Germans after World War II as a precedent,[93] Shapiro insisted that 'expelling a hostile population is a commonly-used and generally effective way of preventing violent entanglements.' In the same article, Shapiro said that 'The ideology of the Palestinian population is indistinguishable from that of the terrorist leadership.'[94]Jeffrey Goldberg was highly critical of these comments and cited them as an example of Shapiro's 'fascist' behavior.[95][96] Shapiro later reversed his view on the West Bank issue, saying it was 'both inhumane and impractical'.[97]
Vox describes Shapiro as a polarizing figure, in part due to tweets such as 'Israelis like to build. Arabs like to bomb crap and live in open sewage'.[64]
In 2007, Shapiro argued that 'the Palestinian-Arab population is rotten to the core', and as 'an entire population [is] corrupted by bloodthirsty anti-Semitism and anti-Americanism', punishing Palestinian leaders is insufficient: 'Collective choices require collective treatment.'[79]
Shapiro supported Israel's settlement building in the occupied Palestinian territories in the West Bank. Shapiro is a longtime opponent of the two-state solution.[98]
2016 election
Shapiro supported Ted Cruz in the 2016 presidential election and openly rejected Donald Trump's candidacy.[99] He called Steve Bannon a 'bully' who 'sold out [Breitbart founder] Andrew’s mission in order to back another bully, Donald Trump.'[100] Shapiro has suggested that the election of Donald Trump was more a vote against Hillary Clinton than a vote in favor of Trump.[6]
LGBT rights
Shapiro opposed the Obergefell v. Hodges Supreme Court ruling that deemed bans of same-sex marriage unconstitutional.[101][102][103] However, he opposes government involvement in marriage, saying, 'I think the government stinks at this,' and expressing concern that because of the ruling in Obergefell v. Hodges, at some point the government may try to force religious institutions to perform same-sex weddings against their will.[66][104] According to Slate, Shapiro has described homosexual activity as a sin.[83] He has said that 'a man and a woman do a better job of raising a child than two men or two women'.[105]
He has stated he does not feel same-sex marriage should be taught to students in schools, saying, 'In California they've already passed laws that you have to teach same-sex marriage in public schools, for example... I went to public school for elementary school and junior high, I don't know why the government is teaching me anything about this stuff. This is for my parents to teach me. This is a values thing'. He also states, 'I'm very much anti gay-marriage in the social sense. As a religious person I think homosexuality is a sin, I think that lots of things are sins that people engage in, I think they should be free to engage in them.'[66] In 2014, Heidi Beirich of the Southern Poverty Law Center disputed Shapiro's assertion that the United States 'is not a country that discriminates against homosexuals' and that 'there is a vastly minute amount of discrimination against gays in this country.'[106]
Shapiro believes transgender people suffer from mental illness, calling it gender dysphoria. (The American Psychological Association does not define being transgender as a mental illness, as 'gender dysphoria' is only diagnosed if an individual suffers significant distress as a result of their gender identity.)[73][107] Shapiro has commented, 'You can't magically change your gender. You can't magically change your sex,' equating this to changing one's age.[6]
In July 2015, Shapiro and transgender rights activist Zoey Tur were on Dr. Drew On Call to discuss Caitlyn Jenner's receipt of the Arthur Ashe Courage Award.[108][109] After Shapiro repeatedly referred to Tur, who is a trans woman, with male pronouns, Tur grabbed his neck and threatened on air to send him 'home in an ambulance'. Shapiro replied, 'That seems mildly inappropriate for a political discussion.' He later filed a police report against Tur.[110][65][111]
In 2018, Shapiro argued that Facebook was targeting conservative sites after Facebook implemented an algorithm change, limiting their traffic, and that they are not transparent enough.[112]
Personal life
In 2008, he married Mor Toledano, an Israeli medical doctor of Moroccan descent.[113][114] The couple have a daughter and a son, born in 2014 and 2016 respectively.[115][116] Shapiro and his wife practice Orthodox Judaism.[117][118] As of November 2017, they live in Los Angeles.[6] In 2019, the FBI arrested a man from Washington for making death threats against Shapiro and his family.[119][120]

That's the biggest theme. See Lucy Nancy Pelosi saying to Charlie Brown Trump, 'No.' Wait a minute, 'Didn't you say yes before?' Yeah, many people have talked about building walls, barriers, security, in the past. They've said many different things over the years. It is much worse than that. Lionel Nation asked incredible questions today concerning all of it. Who controls the body? The head said it does as it tells the body what to do. Then the heart says no, it does as it pumps the blood. Then the ass said, wait no, I do. They laughed at him. So he closed, and then everything closed up. The legs stopped working. Everything else clogged up as well. That may be a joke, but there is a lot of truth there. Who controls the government? Do the little pawns know what the kings and queens of chess are doing? Is Mark Zuckerberg of Facebook trying to make a new thing for the cool kids of the future of tomorrow, a place called LOL? Some people fall for Instagram of Facebook, thinking it has no connection to Facebook. Sunday began around 7 AM. Got up for some coffee. Mom gave me that meme idea. So, I made it, as seen above.
10:50 PM - Saturday - Watched the The Story of Lord Voldemort - Tom Riddle Origins Explained (Re-Upload July, 2017) YouTube Video by MovieFlame which had over ten million views in 2017 and YouTube killed that video like it did mine. It was uploaded again in 2018 and it has a million views now. It tells the story of the main villain of Harry Potter. I think I want to watch all the films, now.
12:06 AM - Good video about why I don't live in the city. The problems with 5G and what it does to people is scary. Bird Box is scary. That is why I plant gardens.
07:17 AM - Put Trump on the face of Charlie Brown, saying, 'Good Grief, I just want a wall.' Put Pelosi on the face of Lucy. Have her say, 'No.' Not I Love Lucy. Mom just gave me that idea. Had some weird dreams but don't really remember them right now. Just got ready for church. Too cold last night. Add blankets or coats next time, not to self. Just got coffee. Set to study more driver's education this morning.
08:58 AM - I wrote on Infocoms: @FlagDUDE08, 'The most important thing you said was number 3, as that is a thing that happens all the time. When I go to a website on my laptop, or an app on my phone, it asks if I want desktop notifications, updates. That can be a problem as that gives them access into the computer and phone and device and tablet itself, the machine. So, I click no and never. Remember to click on the never option so the thing does not keep on popping up to ask. I do not want desktop notifications to be turned on for a bunch of reasons.'
12:52 PM - Went to church at 9 AM. Learned about the stock market, how to trade. We talked about that until like 11 AM, almost 2 hours. I listened. I've traded cryptocurrencies but I didn't tell them. Had too much coffee, again, and too much French vanilla creamer and then added too much chocolate syrup stuff. So, that's my addiction, my drug, and I should stop and drink water instead. Too much juice can be a problem because it's better to eat the fruits instead, if you can, generally. Missed Sunday School because we were talking in the lobby about trading. Good talk. We can all learn so much from each other. During the morning service, there was a talk on abortion and there is a march at the capitol, that is Olympia, on Tuesday. People should do that. I may take my written drivers test on that day. Good that people were able to share ministries that help women and families. We all have roles to play. Pastor played a video of a wild puppy dog, a stray. Very scared, angry, was barking. But was adopted and the dog turned into a nice dog after some weeks. It takes time. People are the same. There are ministries that are helping people get back on their feet. Great to talk about. Great shows online. I'm planning to post an article for my favorite Sunday shows for example and for each day of the week. I want to help connect people to things daily. So much to do, so little time. We got some chips, potatoes, bread. The kids were running around. Good to say hello to them. Maybe I should become a youth pastor or something. I got to do so much. So much on my plate.
01:04 PM - Family First Nationalism Umbrella - See that the umbrella shields our local communities from the threats of Islam, social justice warriors (SJW NPC), globalism, Nazism, communism, Sorosism, nihilism, LGBT paganism, China, technocracy, plutocracy, monopolism, corporatism, Big Pharma, Skull & Bones, pacifism, etc.
03:30-05:40 PM - It's not what you think, my bloody Americans. I mean, from one side of the Pacific Ocean to the other. Was in Vietnam teaching English for 5 years until I return to the USA on Thanksgiving Day 2017 via airplane, where I was retained at the border for like hours while Asians walked by me. They questioned me, looked and searched through all my bags, my clothes, my papers, as if I was a terrorist, but I returned because of Trump and Infowars and family first, community first, country first, rejuvenation, revolution, refocus, a rebirth like never ever before. The picture above is from Thanksgiving 2018 where we went to see Aunt Karen, my mom's sister, and Karen's husband, Phil. Also saw Karen's sons, Nathan and Alan Williams. Saw Nathan's kids, his family. I told Nathan that he introduced me to Sim City on the Super Nintendo, the SNES, around 1994, where he showed us kids how to get like a million dollars which allows you to make a whole a city, a map, full of hundreds of airports which cost like $10K each.
06:00-07:20 PM - I made ten videos where I sang random songs and I uploaded them to Facebook, to my English group, and also to YouTube. I washed the dishes, took a shower, went back to watching YouTube videos from people like Lionel Media. Went to bed at 10 PM. Now, I'm back up at midnight. The videos I made are funny to me. I sang about A Whole New World of Aladdin which turned into Fly Me To The Moon. I sang the Steal Still Vietnam song. I sang the Ra Ra Roo Roo Boo Boo Song. I sang 7 Rings by Adriana Grande, not to be confused with that person Rocky Balboa screams. I sang a Sad Mai Song. Twinkle Star Bar Car Song. God Is An Awesome God Song. Baby One More Time by Britney Spears, featuring an Oatmeal man identifying as a woman. Backstreet Boys - I Want It That Way. Alien Freestyle Song. My throat is a little sore. Stuffy nose. I have a cold. A little sick. But will sleep more. Will drink more water. Will recover.
